GWRRA

Iowa Rider Education q NOTES ---- May 1, 2008

Joe and Judy Pirillo – Iowa Senior District Educators                                Safety is for Life

Safety Weekend 2008… will be in Ankeny on May 9 and 10.  Can’t be there?  Make sure you find out what SURPRISES you missed.  Mark your calendars for May 8 and 9, 2009 for the Iowa District’s 5th Annual Motorcycle Safety Weekend and tune up your skills and knowledge.

Iowa Eagles are Soaring… with OSCAR in 2008.  Iowa E led the way through the end of March.  Wonder what the April OSCAR Points will bring.  I hear the Social Cursers of Iowa S are hot on the tail of the Eagles but will they catch up?  Iowa D is also in the running.  That gives a short run down of Iowa’s Top Three.  Has your Chapter joined the infamous “Bottom Three” of American Idol”?  Don’t let that happen.  You can gain ground quickly by just singing every where the roads takes you.  So “Happy Trails” 2 U.

With May comes… Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  What is your Chapter doing to get the word out that we are all sharing the roads and byways with a lot of other users.  Let’s come up with ways to promote awareness to the public and earn some OSCAR Points along the way.  If you don’t want to do it for OSCAR then do it for yourself and all your loved ones.  An awareness event can be a great opportunity to bring new participants to our ever growing GWRRA Family.

Parade of Wings… is a good way to show off your bikes and trikes.  The side benefit of being in parades is you help make the public aware of motorcycles.  Not only are they attention getters, but showing your Wings out into the public may also gain you new Chapter participants.  So, don’t overlook all your local celebrations.  If you want some good advice on organizing and joining in a parade look to Iowa I.  They have more parades scheduled then I ever knew they had in North East Iowa!  I am sure if you ask Ed Moore, he would be willing to tell you what he has learned planning and schedule parades for Iowa I.  If you want to join Iowa I watch their schedule in their newsletter and let them know you want to join them and I am sure you could.

Need to put my chrome on… well, if you need help maybe your Chapter would have a Mechanics Day.  Then you can all get together, install new safety chrome, change oil, make minor repairs, and all with the help and guidance of others that have done it before and are willing to share their expertise with you.  Iowa I has done this very successfully over the past few years.  If you are heading for Missouri maybe you can join them this year.  Let them know in advance so they know your needs.  What a great way to get some mechanical education while having fun with your GWRRA Friends.  Contact Tim Peverill, Iowa I Educator, and he can give you more information.

qTIP looking for new educational ideas to use in your Chapter?  Look no further than the other Iowa Chapters and see if your Chapter can duplicate successful events held in other Chapters.

GWRRA

Iowa Rider Education q NOTES ---- June 1, 2008

Joe and Judy Pirillo – Iowa Senior District Educators                                Safety is for Life

The Soaring Eagles… of Iowa E take the GWRRA Formula to new heights!  As you may recall PARTICIPATION = FUN and in Iowa E it now should be PARTICIPATION = FUN = NEW GOLD WING.  That’s right; Mike Huppenbauer won a brand new Gold Wing while he was having FUN PARTICIPATING at Nihaues’s annual Customer Appreciation Days.  If you don’t think lighting strikes twice well John Olenick won a new Gold Wing in 1993.  Now that should prove to all in GWRRA, especially the Iowa District, that PARTICIPATION = FUN.  It is now up to you.

LTD in Iowa is on the move… thanks to Denis and Sue Tasker; we now have the opportunity to expand our knowledge by supporting our District LTD.  LTD stands for Leadership Training Division but my personal belief is that it should stand for LIFE Training Division.  Many GWRRA members believe that these programs are for only those people involved in ‘leadership’ and that can’t be farther from the truth!  The skills you learn can be used in GWRRA, the work environment, and within your own family.  So if you get an opportunity join Denis and Sue at their next presentation.  You may surprise yourself with what you learn. Thanks to their instruction Iowa now has four additional RE Seminar Instructors.   Join us in thanking Denis and Sue for a job that is being well done.

Safety Weekend 2008… had surprises for all the participants.  Don’t be surprised if someone puts a ‘FLIP’ in your face.  Someone mentioned they would like an opportunity to ride in the rain and even that was arranged for them for a short period Saturday on the Range.  Make plans now for Safety Weekend 2009 on May 8 and 9, 2009.  No surprise I will see you then.

Want new tires… for your 1800 Gold Wing? Joel Reno of Hawkeye Motorworks showed his support for GWRRA Rider Education by donating a set of tires to be raffled off at the Iowa District AWEgust Fest.  $1 gets you 1 chance, $5 gets you 6 entries, 15 entries for $10, and 20 bucks will gain you 35 tickets.  These tickets will be available at various GWRRA function leading up to AWEgust Fest and will also be available at the rally in the Amanas.  Be sure to thank everyone at Hawkeye Motorworks with your support for their shop.

qTIP… Know the rules of the road and respect other drivers. Don't ever forget that driving is a privilege. Make sure you and your motorcycle are properly licensed and insured. For your own safety and the safety of others, don't ride beyond your ability and road conditions. And know your motorcycle's limitations and capabilities. Also, don't ever lend your motorcycle to an unqualified or unlicensed rider. As the owner, you're legally responsible for their actions.

                                               PROGRESS UPDATE # 1

Welcome to the first of what we hope to be several updates on the progression of planning and events for the up coming Illinois District Rally. Using the well established method of e-mail we hope to keep GWRRA members in the know of the planning stages of the rally and the events that they will find when they attend. We hope that you will pass along the information to those members that do not participate in the electronic world.

As announced at the Winter Warm Up the Illinois District Rally will be held in Quincy. For those of you from other districts or other parts of the state Quincy has many things to offer. There are many points of interest in the area. Some of these include Nauvoo a short ride to the north which is rich in well known history and to the south is Hannibal, MO which most people associate with the works of Mark Twain. For those members that like to put their money where their mouths are a short ride across the Mississippi to the northwest in LaGrange, MO you can find the Mark Twain Casino.  All the areas of interest have many things to offer visitors. There are many great riding routes two of which we hope to use as self guided tours.

It is still early in the palnning stages so until more rally info is available please visit the informational websites at the bottom of this update.
