Wireless DSL Security
Although no system is entirely secure, the CCU3000 provides several features which enhances its security. The WaveRider CCU/EUM3000 units use Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology that encodes the user data in propriety way such that only a WaveRider EUM3000 with the WaveRider Polling MAC software can communicate with the WaveRider CCU3000 access point unit. Commonly available 802.11b hardware devices cannot communicate with the CCU3000, since 802.11b uses a different Media Access Control scheme, different frequency band, and bit rate than the CCU3000. This feature eliminates the largest security threat in wireless communication, which is casual browsing from the common Wi-Fi compatible cards intended for public access in places like airport lounges and hotel lobbies.
Even in the event that an unauthorized user has an EUM3000 with the current software load, has that EUM3000 set to the proper frequency, and it is within radio range of a CCU3000 access point, the EUM must still be explicitly authorized to communicate by the CCU3000 network operator.
Registration: Each EUM3000 has a unique identifier code (mac id) which is factory set, and not user accessible. There is a registration table in each CCU3000 that identifies which EUM3000's will be able to send data. System operators must explicitly enable each authorized EUM3000 in each CCU3000. An EUM3000 will not send user data until it has been requested to send data through a poll message from the CCU3000. Similarly, an EUM3000 will not capture user data that has been specifically sent to another EUM3000. In addition to these security measures, the CCU3000 is set up so that it will only pass TCP/IP and UDP/IP traffic. Other types of data traffic cannot be transmitted. In addition, specific TCP and UDP port numbers can be filtered so that traffic such as Microsoft's Network Neighborhood information will not be passed from EUM to EUM.
The public Internet is an inherently unsecure environment. For computers that are attached to the public Internet, system operators are advised to use a number of additional security techniques including NAT routers, the use of non-routable IP addresses, firewalls, and Virtual Private Network tunneling.
